You are hearing songs recorded between 2005 and 2018. I like to make records that play like musical novels or short story collections. Sometimes, songs I write and record don't hew to the particular story I'm building that time around. These songs, saved in my archive or captured in a live recording, have created a story of their own. I think of them as "the secrets girls keep buried down in their sleep" – which is a line from my Homecoming Queen Texas song "Coronation Day" (Sweet & Toxic). Speaking for this girl, these are the things you think, but don't say – the petty anger, the deep grief, the euphorias, the truths, and the fascinations with other women – and their choices.
This past summer, I went to a boot fair (community flea market) with a friend and she helped me decide which of two Barbies to add to my lifelong collection. We decided that one of them looked a bit cross around the mouth. If a plastic doll can seem to suggest a glint of emotion, what of real girls? – Jeni Hankins
